Unimed Teams up with International Health Partners to Save the Life of a Young Boy in Elbuss Refugee Camp

Updated: May 28

In 2022, Unimed initiated a profound partnership with the global health NGO International Health Partners (IHP), a pivotal step coinciding with Lebanon's pressing healthcare challenges. This alliance holds special significance as it aligns with our commitment to support Lebanon during its time of unprecedented healthcare need.

Unimed's unwavering commitment to sourcing and providing essential medical supplies proved to be a lifeline for many communities grappling with healthcare disparities. With a contribution of $69,000 worth of critical supplies including bag valve masks, syringes, pulse oximeters, blood collection tubes, and mechanical pipettes, Unimed facilitated 275,428 treatments, impacting the lives of countless individuals in need across Lebanon.

Among the beneficiaries of this support was a 12-year-old boy. This courageous young boy, battling chronic asthma exacerbated by harsh environmental conditions, faced a critical health emergency. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, IHP and their partners swiftly mobilised to provide essential medical assistance.

Using a donated oximeter, healthcare workers assessed the boy's oxygen saturation levels, revealing a concerning SPO2 level of 92—well below the normal range. However, with the expertise of dedicated professionals and the support of Unimed's contributions, immediate intervention was initiated to stabilise his condition.

Through the utilisation of an ambu bag, the boy's oxygen saturation levels were rapidly rectified, restoring them to a healthy SPO2 level of 99. This heartwarming success story stands as a poignant testament to the profound impact of collective efforts and the transformative power of compassionate action in healthcare procurement partnerships.

Reflecting on the significance of this collaboration, Shameet Thakkar, Founder and Managing Director of Unimed, shares: "At Unimed, we believe that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare. Our partnership with International Health Partners underscores our unwavering commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Together, we are empowering communities, saving lives, and fostering hope for a brighter tomorrow."

Lily Jones-Herbst, Corporate Partnerships Manager at International Health Partners adds: “We are so grateful for the support of Unimed and all that this donation has been able to achieve in supporting people’s health in Lebanon. Without donations such as this, many more people would suffer due to a lack of access to healthcare – something at IHP we’re working hard to eradicate. Through similar partnerships, we can make a real difference in the lives of people facing difficult circumstances when it comes to their health. Thank you once again Unimed, for working with us to reach those in need.”

At Unimed, we are deeply honoured to have played a pivotal role in this life-changing intervention. Our partnership with International Health Partners not only reinforces our dedication to making a positive impact in global healthcare but also inspires us to continue striving for a healthier, more equitable future for all.
